Natural beauties are ever on the hunt for clean makeup with strong pigments, a broad color selection, truly clean ingredients, and professional formulas. Au Naturale nailed every single one of these in the makeover of their brand with one swipe of a very nifty roller applicator. This is a collection that’s contemporary, sexy, and incredibly fun to use!
The entire line is formulated with clean and sustainable organic, vegan, cruelty-free ingredients, that nourish skin, lips, lids and lashes with shea butter, jojoba seed, essential oils and mineral pigments. This is quite the achievement in and of itself, but they took the rebrand even further with innovative packaging and formulas that make application a breeze and end makeup mishaps. Think: roll on powder eye shadows in an assortment of colors; eyeliners that slip on without tugging skin; lip stains that leave lips dreamy soft; and blushes and powders that pump right onto your brush.
The always tasteful Beauty Heroes jumped on the chance to share the newly rebranded line, and you can now grab a set of these gorgeous products for $45—that’s nearly half off the total value of $87—in the seasonal Makeup Discovery Box. Members of Beauty Heroes get an additional 15% off so the total cost is $38.25. (NO BRAINER!)
Here’s what you get
This discovery contains four full-size products:
*Super-Fine Powder Shadow in Ballet (value $15)
*Swipe-On Essential Eye Pencil in Coco (value $22)
*Pure Powder Blush in Pink Champagne (value $25)
*su/Stain Lip Stain in Hero (value $25)
These are available until Beauty Heroes sells out of them—and I’ve got a feeling they’re gonna go faster than you can glide on that super silky eye pencil.
My thoughts on the line
This makeup is ridiculously fun—so much so that it almost feels illegal. So let’s dig in to each one.
Pure Powder Blush in Pink Champagne (value $25)
If you’ve been missing NARS’s uber-popular blush in “orgasim” (only their top-selling product of all time), then you’ve hit the jackpot. The Au Naturale blush color in Pink Champagne lends cheeks that universally-friendly flush. What’s so cool about it is that it comes in a creative bottle that pumps out metered doses of powder, rather than needing to dip in a brush.
The best ways to apply it are to pump the blush right onto your blush brush (so convenient and mess free) or pump it on the back of your hand or on a palette. I prefer using my hand so that I don’t apply too much at once, but you can depress the pump slowly and extract less than a full pump. Definitely work up to a bolder color as this blush imparts a high dose of pigment. A girl could get hooked on this! I’m smitten.
There are six shades to choose from and Beauty Heroes sells all of them in their shop:
Pink Champagne: a luminous, pink gold.
Gilded Sunset: a luminous, light peach.
Plum: a mulberry pigment with rose undertones.
Pink Lady: a sheer light pink with lavender undertones.
Pomegranate: a deep rose pigment.
Fig: a petal pink pigment with plum undertones.
Swipe-On Essential Eye Pencil in Coco (value $22)
If you’ve come to expect the tug and pull of natural eye pencils, then you need this pencil! I am ready to snap up the well-named Swipe On Pencil in more colors for sure. (Got my eye on Amethyst for starters.) The four marked with an asterisk (*) can be found in the Beauty Heroes shop and 10 are available on the Au Naturale website:
*Amethyst: a deep purple hue.
Carrara: a marble white.
*Coco: a classic warm brown.
*Deep Sea: a subtle ocean blue.
High Tide: a refreshing teel.
Meadow: a forest green with subtle sheen.
Midas Touch: an antique gold.
Napa: a smooth mauve.
*Night: an essential matte black.
Zen: a polished silver.
This is the first truly clean brand that has successfully achieved the super smooth glide that we’ve all longed for since giving up our Urban Decay obsession. The easy application is only half the good news. The icing is that it offers lasting color. I’m thrilled with it!
Super-Fine Powder Shadow in Ballet (value $15)
This is another first, for me anyway: a rollerball that dispenses a fine, rose-toned powder over eyes. It has a luminescent glow to it.
I am surprised by how much color it imparts and actually had to tone it down because pink over my eyelid makes me look like I haven’t had a good night’s sleep in a month. Color aside, I love how effortlessly this roller ball applies, turning the powder into liquid butter. It feels weightless on the eyes and doesn’t crease either.
This product is a pre-launch as it’s not available in the Beauty Heroes shop or on the Au Naturale website yet. But when it is, it will offer a large color selection (over 20!) from neutral shades to darker ones.
su/Stain Lip Stain in Hero (value $25)
This lip stain is a coup for Au Naturale. The company did a bang up job achieving a long-lasting, high pigment stain using all natural and vegan ingredients. According to Beauty Heroes Founder Jeannie Jarnot, “This organic Lip Stain meets the NSF/ANSI 305 USDA Organic standard which is very hard to do with makeup.” The color “Hero” was renamed for Jeannie Jarnot’s obession with the gorgeous plum shade.
It smells like berry candy to me too which is a throwback to the strawberry-scented lipgloss obsession of the 70s (anyone?), yet not at all sickly sweet. There are six lip-smacking colors to choose from in the Beauty Heroes shop, though I wish there were color descriptions and better product photos of all the makeup (maybe they’re coming?). I already ordered another one in Mousse and found color descriptions on the Au Naturale website.
Beauty Heroes carries seven of these which I starred with an asterisk (*):
*Camel: a light tan.
*Mousse: brown with a warm undertone.
*Going Rouge: a deep brick red.
*Hero: a berry purple.
*Terracotta: a burnt orange.
*Purple Reign: a light purple with cool undertones.
On Pointe: a muted ballet shoe blush.
Crushed Bloom: a light orange coral.
*Marsala: a deep mauve.
Salsa: red with orange undertones.
Hero goes on nice and easy and is not one bit drying on the lips which is often an issue with lip stains. The color looks a tad vixen-ish in the tube, but can be layered to either soften into a flattering berry/wine color or go bolder into darker shade. As for how long it stays on, it’s quite impressive and lasted longer than I expected (a few hours, depending on how much I applied).
Makeup on a mission
Au Naturale is at the forefront of rallying for legislation to empower and require the FDA to review the safety of ingredients in our cosmetics and personal care products. An update by the FDA has not happened since 1930s, while Europe has banned over 1300 ingredients.
When you enter your email address in the form on the Beauty Heroes website, you will get an exclusive code via email to receive an Au Naturale su/STAIN in the signature plum shade, Hero, yours free with any order in the Beauty Store through May 31st. ($25 value. One per customer. While supplies last.)
