Even an expert formulator loves to explore the beauty field once in a while. Do you ever wonder what the brands are using besides their own formulas? One day when I had zero time on my hands, I couldn’t help but reach out to these awesome entrepreneurs to find out—and they delivered!
Sometimes it’s more than curiosity about the competition that draws a product developer to another line. Perhaps Josh Rosebrook sums it up best: “I think of using their products as a good friend cooking for you—you get to experience their take on a unique dish!”
I love viewing the clean beauty movement as one big feast and we are all invited to the party. Here are the makers and what they are loving from other brands. I asked them for only one product, but a few couldn’t resist sharing more because the products are just that fabulous.
Linda Thompson, Olìe biologique
Products I love:
One Love Organic Skin Savior Balm—A MUST for winter dog walking.
Splendid, the PERFECT white (and gray) v-neck T-Shirt—Everyone knows my summer uniform is white jeans, gray or white t-shirt, blazer and sandals. This year for everyday will probably be Sam Edelman gold lace up with pom-pom.
RMS Beauty Buriti Bronzer to extend that Spring Break St. Barth’s Glow.
Naturopathica Sweet Cherry Brightening Enzyme Peel—I love all Barb’s enzyme products, the best.
The War of Art: Break Through the Blocks and Win Your Inner Creative Battles by —having a difficult time putting down.
Graydon Moffat, Graydon Clinical Luxury
Lately I’ve been loving Dr. Tung’s Perio Sticks. They have a perfectly tapered edge which makes cleaning between teeth super easy. I also sprinkle some of my Germs Away AromaBlend in to the tin container to give the sticks a boost of anti-microbial action as I cleanse my teeth. It will also freshen your breath too!
Some of my skincare faves include Osmia Organics Rosemary Body Mousse which I like so much I’m even using it on my face. And while I’m spilling the beans, I may as well get a little up close and personal and admit I do rather enjoy using Province Apothecary’s Sex Oil (blush).

I purchase several other brands’ products, not because I can’t make most of them, but because I love supporting these incredible, talented entrepreneurs like myself. I know how hard they work, how passionate they are and how much it takes to create a successful brand in today’s crazy market. Plus they are such magnificent people and I just love them. I think of using their products as a good friend cooking for you—you get to experience their take on a unique dish!
RMS Beauty Un Cover Up—incredible, multi use, moisturizing.
Meow Meow Tweet Cocoa Skin Cream—Love this incredibly effective body balm

Strange Invisible Perfume—Atlantic perfume and pretty much every fragrance she creates.
La Bella Figura Aria Serum—This is really amazing stuff. I love this formula!
Splurge Skin Care “The Rub” Body Scrub—incredible formula. Love their product!
Swati Davidson, Seni Naturals
I actually do have a product that I consider one of my “must haves”—especially as a newer mother who needs multi-tasking products that work well all day.
RMS Beauty un-cover up—This concealer has amazing coverage (especially after sleepless nights with Seni). It’s so moisturizing that it feels like I’m doing something really good for my under eye area when I apply it.
Kym Jakovich, Flight Skincare
A product that I am absolutely in love with is Yarok Feed Your Sunshine Hair Serum.
A couple of drops of this through the hair, especially ends, is one of my favourite hair treatments. With our harsh Australian outdoors it seems to fight off the sun’s rays helping soothe and re-hydrate my hair after a day at the beach, and the essential oils give me a great pick me up at the same time.
Laurel Shaffer, Laurel Whole Plant Organics
Josh Rosebrook’s Enrich Hair Mask. This is so the real deal! This product made my hair so soft, and smooth and silky. I absolutely loved it. I love all of Josh’s products and how much care and integrity they are made with. Also, this particular product resonates with me because it encourages TIME spent on self care and slow beauty, which you know are so important to me.
May Lindstrom’s Blue Cocoon. I know… I know… we make our own balms! Well, I love those too. But the Blue Cocoon is truly special, as anyone who has tried it knows. I use it when I’m sad, or over-worked, or stressed—typically at night right before bed. I am always careful to put an extra bit just under my nose, so that the scent can lull me into a relaxed and easy sleep.
Homestead Apothecary Tinctures (have you looked into them, Sarita? You should!!!!) I use any and all of the Homestead wellness tinctures, especially those for Sleep, Stress, and Digestion – I take all 3 almost daily! The owner Nick is just the sweetest angel you could ever imagine, and I feel so cared for by his products – as well as him anytime we interact. His formulas are so simple, yet powerful, and I love his addition of Gem Essences.
Sapna Gandhi, Biba Cosmetics
Here are some of my fav brands:
100% pure Burdock & Neem Healthy Scalp Shampoo—It treats my sensitive scalp, purifies, unclogs pores, stimulates circulation and helps alleviate dryness, itching, and flaking. It also makes my hair hydrated, nourished, and vibrant. All natural formula does not contain synthetic chemicals, artificial fragrances, chemical preservatives, sulfates, detergents or any other harsh ingredients that can strip or dehydrate. Love [how] it makes my hair so soft.
Oui Shave—I love this luxurious shave. Carrie’s razor is petite & glam, coated in 14k gold. It’s great for my sensitive skin and coarse, ingrown-prone hair. Also the great thing about it is that it comes with the shave oil instead of toxic shave creams. Oil is all natural and smells great and my legs feel so smooth.
Schmidt’s Natural Deodorant—Omg, I’m in love with these deodorants. It’s soft, smells great and no more odor even the next day!!! It’s not greasy, stays longer. It’s vegan and natural.
Leah Klasovsky, Leahlani Skincare
Kopa Kauai Soap Company—I never paid much attention to soap really, until my mother started Kopa Kauai Soap Company. I was never huge fan of bar soaps, I didn’t like the mushy texture that happens to bar soaps after a couple of uses. Then, I experienced my mom’s Sea Salt soaps and it was love at first use. I love all of the soft scents, their beautiful light colors, the creamy coconut lather that they make (not suds-y, rich and creamy) and I especially love the way the soap bar becomes like a polished stone after use, never mushy, so the bar lasts a long time and leaves no residue in the shower. I also love how soft and clean my skin feels, never taut and itchy. And the thing I love the most? That they were made by the loving hands of one of the most genuine and beautiful souls, my mom. Her tag line is “bathe with aloha,” and honestly, you have to experience it to understand how absolutely true that statement is. (I recommend the Orange Blossom and Lavender Mint Sea Salt bars).
Created by Court—My dear friend Courtney Puig is an incredible woman and a talented artist. She makes the mask bowls for Leahlani. Each bowl is created one-by-one, here on Kauai, by her loving hands. She uses a very unique process that requires multiple firings for each bowl. It is a process that I have had the honor of watching from start to finish. Once the bowls have undergone two firings, we get together and I hand sign the golden ‘L’ into each dish. I have many pieces of Courtney’s work. A mug that holds my pens on my desk, a vase that lives on my coffee table and manages to tie my entire living room together with its splash of sea foam and blue hues, and my husband and I have matching coffee mugs that we use each day to drink our coffee out of. It makes our morning coffee ritual that much sweeter. There is something very magical about incorporating hand made items into your every day life—it connects you with the person who made it, and transforms a simple routine into a ritual, and I am all about that.
(Courtney does have an etsy site that she will be listing more items on soon.)
I’m so grateful to each of these brands for their generosity of spirit and for taking the time out of their busy schedules to pay it forward and share their appreciation of other people’s creations. Did you have as much fun discovering their picks as I did?
