I’ve got a hair confession to make.

Shampoos, even the natural ones, have been rather harsh on my hair lately. Maybe it’s a “well, you are in your 40’s” kinda thing, but the texture of my hair is definitely changing, and some products seem to accelerate the process. The shampoos that generate a foaming lather strip the oils from my hair and make it look frizzier and duller over time. Am I imagining it, but strands look whiter too?

Enter Josh Rosebrook Balance and the story shifts entirely.

If I were to choose one word to describe Josh Rosebrook products and where the emphasis lies in his company it would be synergy. The ingredients are carefully chosen to work in synergy with each other to protect and support the natural bio-rhythms of our skin and hair. This creates a harmonious environment that nourishes rather than depletes—a perfect recipe for maintaining and repairing hair and skin and for establishing a healthy balance.

Use Less <3 Love More

I received full sizes of both the shampoo and conditioner, plus a travel-sized Firm Hold Hair Spray thanks to November’s Beauty Heroes box—now available until November 20th. This is the last month for you to take $10 off your first order with the code LOVESPA, so I hope you get to take advantage of it, if you haven’t already.

Why? Because not only do you receive exclusive membership discounts (15% off every time you shop from the Beauty Heroes website), this box consistently sends quality, full-sized luxury beauty products at an impeccable price minus the nasty ingredients. This month is no exception.

You will receive both hero products: Balance Shampoo and Conditioner, as well as a 2 oz. bottle of Firm Hold Hairspray, a $74 value, for only $39 as a regular subscriber, or $29 when using the discount code. It’s an unbeatable savings that you won’t find anywhere else or at any other time.

My friends who decided to subscribe keep telling me how impressed they are with the products and how much they’re enjoying the chance to try new products in rotating categories every month. Hooray! I’m thrilled to hear it and not surprised at all. The quality and price are unsurpassed.

[I don’t need to read more. Take me shopping now!]

Just to remind you, every product is vetted by over 30 spa experts before winning approval for inclusion in the box (more about that in my first post here). It is no wonder that this Josh Rosebrook trio made it into a Beauty Heroes box. Your hair is in for a real treat!

Balance has been leaving my hair looking shiny—yes, shiny!—without any greasy shine enhancers to weigh it down. Both shampoo and conditioner immediately restored its former luster and gave my locks volume. Because they’re meant to be treatments too, I’m not afraid to over-cleanse.

How to use

Sure you can wash in and wash out the products the traditional way. But to receive the full benefits, the directions ask you to leave the shampoo in your hair for at least three minutes while you shut off the water. You can use this time to enjoy a body and facial scrub.

No need to ask me twice to take a longer shower. I left in the shampoo while shaving my legs with my fabulous Ouishave razor and while the Josh Rosebrook Active Enzyme Exfoliator worked its magic on my face. I could really get used to this “slow beauty” practice!

I’ve also used the time to give myself a mini-scalp massage to stimulate follicle circulation and allow the product to penetrate.  What I like to do is add a small amount of shampoo to my hair, give it a quick massage to activate it, splash my head with more water, and then add a bit more product, concentrating on scalp and moving to ends, continuing the massage.

If you’re looking for foaming agents, Josh Rosebrook’s shampoos will not deliver the lathering experience you’ve come to expect from cleansers. As I mentioned above, that lather strips the hair of precious and necessary oils, and it becomes brittle over time. Balance offers a nice, lemon-scented hair wash minus the major suds.

When I went to rinse off the shampoo, I noticed that my hair and scalp practically sucked in the product like a sponge to water. That’s amazing when you find out what’s in it. Honestly, it’s like taking vitamin supplements for the hair.

What takes Josh Rosebrook over the top fabulous

Beauty Heroes says it best: Josh Rosebrook’s Balance shampoo + conditioner are crafted in small batches incorporating over 30 organic herbs, flowers and plants that work in perfect synergy to offer optimal purity, volume and shine.

To read a Josh Rosebrook label, you need to take a seat (and in my case, whip out the bifocals!). Every formula packs in the maximum amount of nutrient-dense ingredients possible. Balance reads like a who’s who hit-list of extraordinary apothecary favorites.

Pulled from Josh’s website (and oh so compelling!):

Balance Shampoo contains:

*ALOE BARBADENSIS (ALOE VERA) LEAF JUICE, AQUA (WATER), *POTASSIUM SHEA BUTTERATE AND POTASSIUM PALM KERNELATE (AFRICAN BLACK SOAP), SODIUM COCOATE (SAPONIFIED COCONUT OIL), *CANNABIS SATIVA (HEMP) SEED OIL, *CAMELINA SATIVA (CAMELINA) SEED OIL, *COCOS NUCIFERA (COCONUT) OIL, *SIMMONDSIA CHINENSIS (JOJOBA) OIL, *VITIS VINIFERA (GRAPE) SEED OIL, *PRUNUS ARMENIACA (APRICOT) KERNEL OIL, *OENOTHERA BIENNIS (EVENING PRIMROSE) OIL, *GLYCERIN, *ROSMARINUS OFFICINALIS (ROSEMARY) LEAF EXTRACT, *CALENDULA OFFICINALIS (CALENDULA) EXTRACT, *URTICA DIOICA (NETTLE) EXTRACT, *NEPETA CATARIA (CATNIP) EXTRACT, *MEDICAGO SATIVA (ALFALFA) EXTRACT, *ROSA CANINA (ROSE HIPS) EXTRACT, *LINUM USITATISSIMUM (FLAX) SEED EXTRACT, *TARAXACUM OFFICINALE (DANDELION) EXTRACT, *TILIA AMERICANA (LINDEN) FLOWER EXTRACT, *ARCTIUM LAPPA (BURDOCK) ROOT EXTRACT, *EQUISETUM ARVENSE (HORSETAIL) EXTRACT, *SALVIA OFFICINALIS (SAGE) EXTRACT, *CHAMOMILLA RECUTITA (CHAMOMILE) EXTRACT, *PANAX GINSENG (GINSENG) EXTRACT, *ORIGANUM VULGARE (OREGANO) EXTRACT, *THYMUS VULGARIS (THYME) EXTRACT, *LAVANDULA ANGUSTIFOLIA (LAVENDER) EXTRACT, *MENTHA PIPERITA (PEPPERMINT) EXTRACT, *HYDRASTIS CANADENSIS (GOLDENSEAL) EXTRACT, *CINNAMOMUM CASSIA (CINNAMON) EXTRACT, *CAPSICUM ANNUUM (CAYENNE) EXTRACT, XANTHAN GUM, POTASSIUM SORBATE, CITRUS LIMON (LEMON) OIL, ROSA DAMASCENA (ROSE) OIL, *ROSMARINUS OFFICINALIS (ROSEMARY) OIL, *CITRUS PARADISI (GRAPEFRUIT) OIL.

*CERTIFIED ORGANIC INGREDIENT

As you can see, aloe vera is the first ingredient, selected for its ability to strengthen and hydrate hair, while treating and protecting the scalp. African Black Soap and saponified coconut oil clean hair without stripping it while promoting hair growth.

What’s the difference between Balance and Nourish? If you have normal to oily hair, which I do, then this is the shampoo + conditioner for you! My hair is straight but has waves when I leave it to its own devices. Nourish didn’t do the trick for my tresses because within a short amount of time, it looked a little too greasy for having washed it earlier that day—perfect for someone with dry hair, but not so great for my oilier tendencies. Balance is just right.

Firm Hold Hair Spray

IMG_20151013_135601

What a cute sidekick the Firm Hold Hair Spray makes! I’m not a hair spray user—though I’m hooked on Lift!—so I really can’t tell you much about this product. However, Jeannie Jarnot, Beauty Heroes founder, swears by it. It is a much healthier departure from the mainstream hairsprays that contain a barrage of ingredients that are potentially hazardous to our health and environment, not to mention damage hair with drying alcohol.

A case in point: I’ve had friends whose asthma is triggered by the smell of regular hairsprays. Labels entitle companies to protect trade secrets by using blanket terms such as “fragrance,” so we don’t even know exactly what’s in them. Of course, the Firm Hold Hair Spray is an open book and the scent is fabulous, as with the entire line. A full list of ingredients is listed here.

More about Josh Rosebrook

It can be daunting to know that you’re about to meet someone who is talented, spiritual, wise, and at the helm of a booming clean business that has been endorsed by celebrities whose tresses have been teased and tended to by the man himself. But Josh Rosebrook was as humble and kind as can be when we spent time together in Chicago for A Night for Green Beauty.

Of course, that comes as no surprise to anyone who has ever interacted with him on social media (yes, he’s still the one behind all his tweets and posts and won’t have it any other way).

If he’s the one deciding the rules of engagement online, he has also been the one to bend the rules on beauty in creating his eponymous line—much to our delight.

In 2011, he introduced Nourish, then called Nourishing Shampoo, his first shampoo and conditioner launch, at a time when it was hardly in vogue to be using natural products, let alone low-lathering shampoos. Sodium Laurel Sulfate was just starting to be a thing and not many people understood the hazards of “dirty” hair washing or how those suds were affecting the health of our hair.

It was at that time that I read a glowing review about Josh Rosebrook’s Shampoo and Conditioner on Alicia Silverstone’s blog, The Kind Life, and raced to buy them. I immediately became an early fan of his. Remarkably, he remembers my order to this day!

Leave it to Josh to not only become a pioneer in the green beauty biz but also to become a guide to others. Fast forward to 2015 as he continues to push parameters in his new releases (if you haven’t been reading his blog, it’s a MUST!).

He will also be teaching at The W.E.L.L. SUMMIT on November 6-7, not about hair but about using meditation to live in abundance. He surely knows. To meet him is to be in the presence of a truly evolved and magnanimous human being.

His latest launch is already lauded as a hit in the press and as Beauty Heroes new-comers, Balance Shampoo and Conditioner are poised to become two all-star favorites. They’ve certainly made it to my list.

* As a Beauty Heroes ambassador, I’d like to clarify that every post that I write is of my own volition based on my authentic experience with the product. Thus far, it has been a breeze to review the boxes because they’ve been consistently outstanding and easily represent the best in green beauty. Should there be a month that I feel otherwise, I will handle it honestly and with integrity as always.
