The inspiring Amy Rueda, founder of Authentic Skin Remedies, discusses two stellar ingredients: Seawater with Rosewood essential oil.
First, I want to preface this interview with my opinion on the most important difference in skincare when comparing natural plant derived ingredients vs. man made, chemical synthetic ingredients—”mimicking plants.”
“Many times, all our body needs to heal itself has been found in nature.”
Because many individual plant based ingredients have multiple healing benefits, combining a few of them in one product, can give multiple uses for hair and skin.
I personally believe man has created synthetic versions of lavender or avocado oil based on the fact that corporations can patent skincare ingredients using chemicals (you cannot legally patent a plant). My Authentic Skin Remedies use remedies for skin and hair created from plant-based botanicals. Many of these uses have been documented for thousands of years. What is so amazing is when you combine one or two ingredients in plant-based formulations you can get 3-8 multipurpose uses out of one product!
What are the skin-loving benefits of Rosewood essential oil?
Because it is such a gentle oil, rosewood can be very beneficial to sensitive or irritated skin. The tree’s antiseptic and bactericidal properties make it a suitable natural remedy for acne and mild wounds. Rosewood essential oil has anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties. Rosewood may also be useful as a mild painkiller, so it’s great during times of reactive, hormonal, or sensitive skin.
When used as a tissue regenerator, it diminishes scars, wrinkles, and stretch marks. Since rosewood is regarded as an emotionally uplifting and comforting oil by many aromatherapists, it is often used to rebalance the nervous system in times of stress. Best of all, rosewood is non-irritating, non-toxic, and not sensitizing [for most people], making it extremely versatile and one of the safer oils to use directly on the skin.
What are the benefits of seawater?
Hippocrates, the Father of Medicine, discovered the therapeutic qualities of seawater by noticing the healing effects it had on the injured hands of fishermen. The seawater not only restricted infection risks, but patients who followed treatments involving the use of seawater found that it also promoted pain relief. It is now known that sea salt therapy is an effective treatment that assists in the rejuvenation of cells and also induces a healthy exchange of minerals and toxins between the blood and the water.
As a skincare formulator, I love using seawater to cure common skin ailments.
Seawater is great as a skin toner. It also has great applications for skin allergies. Sea-bathing gives an antiseptic effect to the skin and reduces histamine that causes inflammation and itching sensation. The National Pediatric Hospital, allergy section, has been giving the therapy since 1988 with many successful results. The balancing effects of seaweed on circulation leave the skin’s complexion radiant with an even tone and coloring.
What product includes these two ingredients?
Together Seawater and Rosewood are key ingredients in Balance Seawater Facial Mist. As a busy mother of three kids, I love that it is safe for the entire family. For example, it is great as a refresher on hot days for the entire family. Throw it in your purse for your kid’s next soccer game, or during your next family island vacation. It’s the perfect cooling skin spritzer for on-the-go.
As a skin toner, it’s great for evening skin and rebalancing skin’s pH stripped by a cleanser. Because of the natural anti-bacterial properties of both Seawater and Rosewood, Balance works to combat reactive, sensitive skin, blemishes, redness, and irritation. It’s an invigorating, mineral-rich seawater spray to help skin feel uplifted, balance moisture, and refresh skin and hair. This multi-tasking mist acts as toner to help prep skin before applying facial serum and facial crème and acts as a great blending formula for layering other skin care products.
Because of the balancing and toning effects and the anti-fungal properties of these two ingredients it works wonderfully as a natural, neutralizing deodorant for refreshing odor on skin due to perspiration or hair in between washing. These key Ingredients provide a boost of vital minerals too.
The Balance Seawater mist can be used to give hair a beach waves when spritzed on hair!
What customers are saying about it…
“I use my Balance as a blending formula to extend the use of my (Enrich) serum, spritz a little on my face to tone and mineralize and while my skin is wet, I apply the serum and a little goes a LONG way!” ~ Deirdre P, San Jose Ca
“I discovered using Balance on my nine-year-old and five-year-old’s stinky feet. They tend to wear shoes without socks during the summer. Before bed I spray their feet..they love it and I know it is safe as a deodorant!” ~ Betty M. Bay Area
My favorite multi-use of Balance is as a makeup setter, on a night out I use mineral makeup which tends to look matte and heavy, after I am done with my makeup I spray balance to set the makeup and give my skin a dewy glow!” ~ Amy Rueda Founder, Authentic Skin Remedies
Bonus question: Name one product that you can’t live without. (Just for fun, cuz we all want to know!)
My all-time favorite product is that I can’t live without is my Enrich Nourishing Lipid Serum ($100).
I use it before bed to plump up and nourish fine lines and wrinkles. Its plant-based ingredients such as sunflower oil, hemp seed oil, and primrose oils provide the skin with Essential Fatty Acid in lipid form designed to help improve skin by absorbing and regenerating the moisture level beneath skin’s surface.
Many times, I notice my customers have fine lines because of dehydration of the lipid layer due to the fact that many moisturizers with synthetic ingredients sit on the top of the skin but don’t actually nourish it and replace essential nutrients and oils. Because it’s such a blendable oil, I mix a little with my mineral foundation to give it flawless coverage and smooth out makeup sitting in the crevices and fine lines.
As a busy, tired 40-year-old with three small children, this product has transformed my skin and is my absolute must have! [Note from the blog: Say what?! Amy is gorgeous. Her skin regimen clearly works!!]
The Edible Facial take on Authentic Skin Remedies
Mmmm…Ahhhhhhhh…Oooooohhhhh… Nope. It’s not the old Herbal Essences commercial. That’s me every time I use one of Amy’s products. I’m not kidding. The scents are intoxicating. Ya hear me? Intoxicating, I tell you! I seriously can’t get enough of them. And because of that I worship these products. They are like my shrine products that I only pull out on special occasions. Which is really dumb because I need to be enjoying these soooo much more!
As you know, if you’ve been reading about my slightly psychotic use of cosmetics and skin care products (rock on fellow beauty bloggers who know exactly what I mean!), I try a lot of stuff. When a great oil/toner/product lands on my counter, I know it. Lemme mince no words here: Authentic Skin Remedies are fabulous!
Allow me to ‘splain myself, Lucy. Firstly, since overcoming her own bout with cancer, Amy Rueda made it her mission to educate other people about reducing their toxic load. She credits a large part of her recovery on doing exactly that. Besides finding herself cancer-free, she was also able to have another baby, even after treatment. She calls herself a cancer “surthriver”—and she most certainly is one. As part of her mission to help others heal, she started her own range of more natural skin care, minus many controversial ingredients that have been shown to do more harm than good.
They’re a lot of fun to use partly because one whiff of the fragrances sends me on a Tahitian vacation (Polish: Sugar Exfoliating Scrub & Gloss in Island Bamboo); climbing up a palm tree to collect coconuts (Cleanse: Sulfate Free Calming Gel and Quench); frolicking (yep, frolicking) through a field of lavender (Gloss in Italian Lavender), and bathing in a Pumpkin Latte (Refine: Fruit Enzyme Exfoliation).
Amy designed each product to work in multiple ways. I tried Balance as a toning mist (it’s lovely. Sandalwood is also highly nourishing for the skin!), and as a deodorizer. I even used it as a deodorant some days and surprisingly stayed stink-free! You can also use this spray to create those coveted beach waves. As I’ve got short hair, I haven’t tried this, so you’ll have to let me know.
Full list of ingredients:
Purified Seawater, Santalum album (Organic Sandalwood) Oil, Aniba rosaeodora (Organic Rosewood) Oil, Lavandula angustifolia (Organic Lavender) Oil, Pelargonium graveolens (Geranium) Oil
As with all products, please read all the ingredients to see which ones work for your skin and which ones don’t. Some of the products list merely “fragrance” so if you’re super sensitive, you may be happy starting with trial kits too.
