Discovering a signature scent took me years. In college, I went through bottles of Joy, Fred Hayman, Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein, Prescriptives Calyx—and I’m sure there are more that I’m forgetting. I knew when I hit the right fragrance by the amount of comments that I’d get on smelling good.

After leading a more natural lifestyle, it’s hard for me to tolerate those strong perfumes anymore. My kind of fragrance leaves a lingering feeling of wanting more without being overpowering—and without containing potentially harmful ingredients.

That’s why I was very excited to find Ambre Blends, a women-owned eco-conscious business in Indianapolis that bases each fragrance on amber essence, used for centuries for its medicinal and aphrodisiac qualities.  The products are made by hand with natural and vegan ingredients from around the world. The company earns props for packaging that’s biodegradable, refillable, and made from recycled and/or locally sourced materials. Plus all of the bottles and jars are recyclable.

What’s unique is that each scent interacts differently with the individual’s body chemistry so nobody smells the same.

It’s a hard fragrance to describe, but I’m often reminded of a just-showered fresh scent with evocative and intriguing appeal. But I knew it was “the one” when I got compliments on how good I smelled every time I wore it. Regardless of how many other scents I test, I always head back to Ambre Blends because I simply find the fragrance irresistible.

The line is designed to be layered to create a longer lasting scent and to preserve the integrity of the oils that may become compromised when mixed with artificial fragrances in mainstream products. Mainly I use the roll-on oil blends and spritzers, but I’ve also enjoyed the body lotions, skin tonics, soaps, and deodorants (yes, they work!).

To switch things up, the company recommends combining the single essences with each other to create a unique scent.

Here’s the breakdown of the different essences ($46 each for 10 ml.) as described by the company:

  • Ambre essence—the base of all the blends. It carries a clean, euphoric, and sensual aroma.
  • Invoke essence—builds on ambre essence and adds an invigorating blend of jasmine, neroli, sandalwood, and a hint of rose, for a spring blooms kissed by the sun scent.
  • Solace essence—weaves in vanilla with another rare ingredient for the purpose of comfort and attraction.
  • Unmasque essence—blends ambre with 13 pure oils to ground you and allure others to reveal the true individuality in each of us.

My personal favorite is the Ambre essence roll on. I can’t get enough of it! Truth is, you can’t use too much because the fragrances are totally unlike strong, commercial perfumes with alcohol and harmful pthalates that can lead to asthma, headaches, or other adverse effects.

The Spritzer ($30 for 2 oz.) is an ideal companion to refresh the scent throughout the day. I love misting all over and allowing my hair to absorb some of the clean aroma.

My next favorite product would be the Skin Tonic, ($36 for .85 oz.), a face and body oil that is extremely rich and versatile.  It contains 18 natural and certified organic ingredients chosen for their medicinal and healing properties, combined with the signatures essences.

The tonic incorporates some of the most nutrient-dense oils around like sea buckthorn, jojoba, avocado, apricot kernel, almond, coconut, and more. Plus these oils combine with arnica, CoQ10, calendula, and Green Tea extract to pack a powerful skin-drink.

I started out with a travel size and a sample pack to get acquainted with each scent and I’m happy that I did because I was able to play around with a few winning scent combinations to keep things interesting every day.
